Objectives
- to promote the profession of midwifery
- to speak nationally and regionally in the interests of midwives and women
- to uphold the International Confederation of Midwives/World Health Organisation’s definition of the midwife’s role and scope of practice
- to uphold and promote the New Zealand Midwifery Model of Partnership with women
- to uphold the New Zealand College of Midwives Code of Ethics
- to develop and review the Standards for Midwifery practice
- to maintain local Midwifery Standards Review Committees to provide annual reviews for practising midwives
- to provide local Resolution Committees to deal with individual consumer concerns
- to promote the health status of women and their families
- to nominate Midwife Advisors to the Ministry of Health and other Government Agencies
- to develop, evaluate and promote midwifery education
- to promote research and the development of literature and resources in midwifery
- to promote biculturalism in midwifery by recognising Maori as Tangata Whenua of Aotearoa. The midwifery profession in New Zealand honours the principles of partnership, protection and participation as affirmation of the Treaty of Waitangi
- to liaise with other organisations in New Zealand and internationally to promote the objectives of the College
- to affiliate to the International Confederation of Midwives
- to provide professional services to midwives
- to protect the autonomous role of the midwife
- to provide the mechanism for midwives to belong to the Midwifery and Maternity Provider Organisation (MMPO)
- to provide the mechanism for midwives to belong to the Midwifery Employee Representation and Advice Service (MERAS)
